BRISTOL − Hurston Waldrep will pitch for the Atlanta Braves against the Cincinnati Reds when the MLB Speedway Classic resumes at 1 p.m. ET Aug. 3.

Waldrep, whom the Braves appointed as their additional player for the game, will take over with two on and one out in the bottom of the first with the Reds leading 1-0. Brent Suter will take over the Reds in the top of the second inning to replace Chase Burns, the former Tennessee pitcher who started the game.

The game was suspended at at 10:28 p.m. Aug. 2 after a second rain delay at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The game was scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. with the first pitch at 7:24, but weather forced a 2-hour, 17-minute delay. Burns threw the first pitch when the game started at 9:41 p.m., but it was short lived as the grounds crew scrambled back onto the field 16 minutes later in pouring rain.

Knoxville native Spencer Strider was the starting pitcher for the Braves, but they opted to pitch Austin Cox instead of the CAK alum following the lengthy delay. Cox allowed one run on three hits in ⅓ innings before rain suspended the game.

The Reds stuck with Burns to start after the delay. He struck out two in one inning. Burns pitched at Tennessee in 2022 and 2023 before transferring to Wake Forest. He was the No. 2 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Waldrep is making his first appearance of the season for the Braves. He is 7-8 with a 4.42 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett. The first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft pitched two games with the Braves in 2024, going 0-1 with a 16.71 ERA.
