The fitness community is grieving a shocking loss.
Jodi Vance—a beloved bodybuilder and personal trainer—died Feb. 27 after experiencing a medical emergency, her family shared on social media. She was 20 years old.
“For those that haven’t heard yet, Jodi passed away yesterday afternoon,” her family wrote in a post on her Instagram page Feb. 28. “Her heart stopped due to complications of severe dehydration. Despite all efforts by the hospital, they were unable to revive her.”
Vance’s loved ones went on to highlight her infectious spirit as they expressed their grief.
“She was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be missed every single day,” their statement continued. “This was sudden and unexpected. Please give her family time to process this loss in peace.”
They added, “If anyone takes anything from this, please put your health first.”
One day before her passing, Vance—who also coached other bodybuilders—shared that she was in Ohio for the Arnold Sports Festival to support her trainees.
Alongside photos and video of herself working out, she wrote on Instagram at the time, “Who thinks @arnoldsports will ever bring back Figure, Wpd, Wbb, or 212?”
Following the tragedy, Vance’s trainer Justin Mihaly said that he believed she made a “significant error” in her fitness regimen leading up to her death.
“Jodi used two extremely hazardous substances to improve her physique,” he said in a video posted on Instagram March 1, adding that she took the undisclosed substances without the knowledge of him or her family. “There’s no reason she should have been dehydrated.”
Mihaly added that he believed Vance’s health had “become quite concerning” and alleged that her inner circle tried to intervene.
“Many people who loved Jodi tried to get her to pull off the gas pedal a bit,” he said. “Her work ethic was actually second to nobody. It was so hard getting her to pull back.”
In light of Vance’s passing, Mihaly noted his wish to remember “the person that she was.”
“I believe the beam of light she brought to every social interaction, networking event, expo show,” he noted, “I think that should be highlighted.”
