The Pittsburgh Steelers made major moves when they dealt for star Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf. Now they have two bona-fide No. 1 receivers, with George Pickens also in the fold.
How Pittsburgh will keep both receivers happy is one thing. But the potential to make life a nightmare for opposing defenses is certainly there.
How the two will play together will be fascinating. To that end, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger joined The Pat McAfee Show on Monday to discuss how he sees it going.
“I’m not as familiar with watching DK in terms of like can he move around in different spots,” Roethlisberger said. “I saw, as much as I’ve seen I guess, GP do some slot stuff. I’d love to see GP go into the slot a little bit. I’d love to let him do some things in there. And I’m sure DK, he can go wherever you want.
“But I would probably keep GP at the X and put DK at the Z. Put him out there to the trips side. That’s just my initial thought without getting into it.”
Whatever the case, the Steelers now have a pair of very productive wideouts. The two had remarkably similar production last season. Close enough to be indistinguishable.
Metcalf tallied 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns playing for the Seahawks. Meanwhile, starring for the Steelers, Pickens had 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns.
Both will get the chance to shine next to each other going forward, as long as any potential locker room issues are smoothed over. Roethlisberger further expanded on everything you can do with two superstar wideouts on the same roster for the Steelers.
“I think that’s what’s so much fun if you get guys that are predominantly outside, kind of go-ball receivers and put them in the slot and create those matchups… because we know that nickel DBs and stuff aren’t, they don’t want to necessarily guard those guys,” Roethlisberger said. “You go Cover 2, two man and now the safeties are splitting and you’ve got DK or GP in the middle running the go-route down the middle of the field, that forces some scary type stuff, you know?”
