  13. It’s absolute delight for the Brewers as their superb season continues to gather pace.
  14. There were some serious scenes when Collins hit that walk-off home run but a word also for William Contreras, whose two home runs kept the Brewers in it earlier.
  15. They could make it a perfect ten wins in a row if they can get past the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow.
  16. And that is how it’s done!
  17. Isaac Collins smashes a solo home run to right field to win it for the Brewers.
  18. Edwin Diaz allows a home run for the first time since April and the Mets lose a heartbreaker despite leading for eight innings.
  19. What a game!
  20. Nick Mears is in to pitch for Hall.
  21. He walks Juan Soto in the ninth but gets out Francisco Alvarez, Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo.
  22. The Brewers have one last chance to win it.
  23. A pitching change for the Mets with Edwin Diaz in for Helsley.
  24. Diaz immediately delivers a wild pitch and the runners advance.
  25. The Brewers have men on second and third – can they complete the comeback here?
  26. No. Anthony Siegler lines out to Alonso and we are going to a decisive ninth inning.
  27. Joey Ortiz with another ground ball and he gets it past the desperate dive of Alonso!
  28. Brice Turang scores, Danny Jansen is up to second and the Brewers are level!
  29. Ryan Helsley is up to pitch for the Mets and he walks Brice Turang first up.
  30. Danny Jansen then singles with a groundball to left and now the Brewers have runners on first and second and the tying run in scoring position.
  31. DL Hall has pitched really well for the Brewers since coming in during the fifth inning.
  32. The Mets haven’t had a single hit since then and with two more strikeouts in the eighth Hall is keeping the Brewers in it.
  33. A vital double play for the Mets sees them maintain their lead.
  34. The Brewers had Isaac Collins on third base after another hit for Contreras, but Andrew Vaughn grounds into a double play.
  35. A missed chance for the Brewers to level it up.

  67. Jen Powal – the first female umpire to referee a Major League Baseball game in the regular season – is back in Atlanta this afternoon as the Braves take on the Miami Marlins.
  68. Pawol, 48, made history as she oversaw first base during Saturday’s game between the same two teams and today she is calling the strikes behind the mound.
  69. She was welcomed to the pitch by cheers and a standing ovation.

  71. He’s done it again!
  72. William Contreras measures a fly ball out to right field for his second home run of the day.
  73. Isaac Collins scores from first and the Brewers close the gap again – it’s now 6-5 in Milwaukee.
  74. That all came after a pitching change for the Mets with Reed Garrett replacing Sean Manaea.
  75. Garrett gets his three outs but this is now a one-run game as we head for the sixth.

  88. Hall stops the flow of runs for the Mets by striking out Mauricio and earning the ground out from Mullins.
  89. The Mets have extended their lead again though and as we head for the bottom of the fifth it’s 6-3.
  90. Into the fifth and Juan Soto is on base again with a single.
  91. Brandon Nimmo’s sacrifice bunt takes Soto to second and then a Brandon Lockridge error off a looping Pete Alonso hit allows Soto to score.
  92. Alonso is up to second, the Mets lead 6-3 and we have a pitching change for the Brewers as DL Hall comes in for Priester.
  93. Joey Ortiz stays in it by fouling balls off and finally earns something to hit.
  94. He knocks a ground ball past the shortstop and the runners are on their way.
  95. Andruw Monastrerio and Danny Jansen score and the Brewers have cut the Mets lead to 5-3.
  96. A three-run inning for the Brewers and they are right back in this!
  97. Danny Jansen’s double to left field puts two men on base for the Brewers.
  98. Manaea then walks Lockridge and the bases are loaded!

  2. Cedric Mullins has his first home run for the Mets.
  3. The former Orioles star goes after a Priester curveball and just about has enough on it to get over the wall.

  8. More good news for the Mets as Manaea records a fourth strikeout to shut out the Brewers and end the third inning.
  9. Pete Alonso is now on base for the Mets. He arrows a line drive to right field beyond the diving Brandon Lockridge and slides into second.
  10. Can the Mets extend their lead?
  11. They can! Ronny Mauricio hits a ground ball out to right field. The Brewers try to get Alonso out at home but are too late. Eventually they get Mauricio out as he tries to take second, but the run scores and the Mets have a fourth early run.

  14. Sean Manaea 2024 form comparison between London Series
  15. Sean Manaea’s season seemed to change in 2024 after his trip to the UK for the London Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
  16. He helped guide his team to 16 wins and just 4 defeats after the London Series with the Mets making it all the way to the Championship Series.
  17. He’s made a good start here as well, seeing off the Brewers comfortably in the second inning.
  18. Brett Baty leads off for the Mets in the second and quickly reaches a full count as Priester makes a pitch clock violation.
  19. Baty takes advantage and launches a rocket over the wall at centre-field.
  20. The Mets lead 3-0 halfway through the second and look like they mean business.
  21. Isaac Collins smashes a double down the middle for the Brewers but Sean Manaea stays calm for the Mets and gets the three outs to protect his side’s early lead.
  22. Cedric Mullins is out with a broken bat and the innings is over for the Mets, but they will be happy with their two runs.
  23. Both Lindor and Soto showed the Mets intentions with those important steals to get into scoring positions, and they were both rewarded.
  24. Alonso is unable to continue the Mets impressive start as he is run out in a pressure-relieving double play for the Brewers.
  25. But with Soto on third, Jeff McNeil hits over the infield for a single and the Mets have their second run.
  26. The Mets quickly have another man in scoring position as Soto follows Lindor’s example to steal second base.
  27. Brandon NImmo is patient enough to force a walk and the Mets have two men on.
  28. Up steps Pete Alonso with the chance to become the Mets all-time leading home run scorer.
  29. Juan Soto squeezes a ground ball through the middle and Lindor can safely head for home to put the Mets on the board immediately.
  30. Priester is wayward for the Brewers early on and hits Lindor with a pitch, enabling him to walk to first.
  31. Lindor then manages to quickly steal second to get himself into scoring position.
  32. The teams are ready. Francisco Lindor will lead off for the Mets with Quinn Priester on the mound for the Brewers.

  59. Ahead of this weekend’s series in Milwaukee, the New York Mets have been sliding badly.
  60. The Mets have lost eight of their last ten games and came close to suffering a humiliating no-hitter at the Cleveland Guardians earlier in the week.
  61. While the Mets are the most out-of-form team in Major League Baseball heading into this series, the Milwaukee Brewers are the most in-form.
  62. Their nine wins in the last 10 games mean they have the best record of any team this season, winning a total of 70 and losing just 44.

  80. This week Red Sox fan John in Scotland asked: “what does the term ‘hitting cleanup’ mean?”
  81. The term refers to the fourth batter in the line-up – the “cleanup” hitter.
  82. The opening three batters in the nine-man line-up are often strong hitters and quick base-runners, aiming primarily to get on base and give their team the best chance of scoring runs.
  83. The batter in fourth position is expected to then “clean up” the bases, driving home any runners either by hitting a home run or by getting on base themselves.
  84. Cleanup hitters tend to be the most powerful in the team because they need to be able to smash home runs, but the idea of a “cleanup hitter” has changed over time.
  85. Teams are now often aiming to be more flexible with their line-ups by putting their best players up first to maximise their number of at-bats.
  86. For example, Los Angeles Dodgers star player Shohei Ohtani usually bats at one or two in the line-up, while Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees tends to bat at three.
