Atlanta Braves vs Cincinnati Reds – July 31, 2025

The Cincinnati Reds picked up a win last night to avoid being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tonight they are back on the field and will look to start off a new series in the right way as they welcome the Atlanta Braves to Great American Ball Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET. Tonight’s game is free on MLB.tv and will also be available on MLB Network.

Starting Pitchers

Andrew Abbott

It’s been an All-Star year for Andrew Abbott. And in the two games since he tossed a perfect inning in the All-Star game he’s allowed three runs over 12.0 innings with 12 strikeouts against the Mets and the Rays.

The splits for Abbott essentially don’t exist this season. Both lefties and righties are hitting very similarly across the board in just about every category.

After making eight appearances with the Yankees this season and posting a 5.91 ERA, New York sold him to Atlanta three days ago and Carlos Carrasco is set to make his Braves debut tonight.

The splits this season against Carrasco are huge. The sample size is still small. Lefties are hitting for a high average, but aren’t hitting for any power and have a moderate at best walk rate. Right-handed hitters, though, are hitting the ball against him like prime Juan Gonzalez – showing off a very high average and tons of power, but drawing few walks.

News and Notes

Nick Martinez is moving to the bullpen

Late last night the Reds traded for Zack Littell. That meant the team had six healthy starting pitchers. Someone had to go. That someone is Nick Martinez. He is heading to the bullpen for Cincinnati – at least for the time being. You can read more about all of that here from our piece earlier today if you would like.

Rece Hinds to Triple-A

With Ke’Bryan Hayes arriving in Cincinnati today, the Reds optioned Rece Hinds back to the minor leagues.

The Padres are going for it

San Diego currently has a 3.0 game lead over Cincinnati for the final wild card spot. They have gone out and made several big trade acquisitions in the last 24 hours. Their trades this afternoon dropped the Reds playoff odds at Fangraphs by a full percentage point from where it was this morning.
