Arkansas sees program-record four Hogs drafted in first round of 2025 MLB Draft

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Sunday night kicked off the first three rounds of the MLB Draft, and many Arkansas Razorbacks were projected selections in the first round.

But, four selections? That’s a program first. The Hogs tied Tennessee with four first-round draft picks each.

The first Hog off the board was right-handed pitcher Gage Wood, who was selected No. 26 overall by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Next was infielder Wehiwa Aloy, selected No. 31 overall by the Baltimore Orioles.

The Los Angeles Dodgers had back-to-back selections at No. 40 and 41, and chose to select back-to-back Hogs.

Left-handed pitcher Zach Root was drafted 40th, while outfielder Charles Davalan was selected 41st.

Wood, a Batesville, Ark., native, made 10 starts on the mound this year and went 4-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 37.2 innings. He recorded 69 strikeouts and walked only seven batters all season long. Wood limited opposing hitters to a .194 batting average and logged two quality starts on the year, highlighted by his legendary 19-strikeout no-hitter against Murray State in the College World Series.

Aloy became one of the most popular names in the SEC, attributed to his disciplined, flashy defense, conjoined with his power and consistency at the plate. Aloy was named the winner of the Golden Spikes Award and SEC Player of the Year after slashing .350/.434/.673 with a team-high 21 home runs and 68 RBIs in 65 games. The Wailuku, Hawai’i, native became the first Hawaiian-born player and first player born outside the U.S. mainland to win the Golden Spikes Award.

Root earned All-America and All-SEC honors after a strong 2025 campaign that saw him go 9-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 99.1 innings pitched. Root totaled a team-best 126 strikeouts, the seventh most by an Arkansas pitcher.

Davalan was also an All-America and All-SEC selection after playing in all 65 games. The Quebec, Canada, native finished as the team leader in base hits with 93, stolen bases with 10, and second in runs scored with 71.

Before Sunday, 10 players in the history of Arkansas baseball had been selected in the first round. Arkansas has had at least one selection in each of the past 51 MLB Drafts dating back to 1975.

This year was the first time Arkansas had multiple selections in the first round of the MLB Draft.

The MLB Draft continues at 10:30 CST Monday, July 14, on MLB.com
