The Boston Red Sox announced on Friday morning that starting pitcher Dustin May would be taking the mound on Sunday against the Houston Astros for his team debut.
Just five hours later, the Red Sox made a switch, announcing that Lucas Giolito would instead be getting the start for Sunday’s series finale.
“Lucas Giolito is now starting for the Sox in Sunday, rather than Dustin May. Guessing it had to do with travel logistics of multiple cross-country flights, but we’ll know more from Cora in a few minutes,” Alex Speier of the Boston Globe wrote on Bluesky.
Manager Alex Cora talked with reporters on Friday afternoon and laid out the plan for the starting rotation. May’s debut is being pushed to Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals.

“Dustin May’s Red Sox debut will be Wednesday against the Royals, Alex Cora said. They pushed him back from the originally scheduled Sunday because it would have meant too many days off for Lucas Giolito,” Tim Healey of the Boston Globe posted on Bluesky. “Garrett Crochet will pitch Tuesday, Alex Cora said. (And Brayan Bello on Monday.)”
May was acquired in a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, just hours ahead of the 6 p.m. trade deadline.
