Active shooter at Fort Stewart; Base, airfields, schools on lockdown, casualties reported

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WTOC) – [UPDATE 12:20 p.m. 8/6/2025] According to Community Superintendent Mr. Brian Perry, Fort Stewart Schools are now in, “LOCK OUT/Secure status. This means NO one will enter or leave the school at this time, however, teaching and learning will continue. There is NO immediate threat to any of our schools at this time.”

[UPDATE 12:14 p.m. 8/6/2025] Appling County Schools said they are aware of an ongoing active shooter situation at Fort Stewart.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in alignment with our commitment to student and staff safety, all Appling County Schools are currently in a Level 1 lockdown. We are closely monitoring the situation and remain in communication with local law enforcement. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,” wrote Appling County Schools.

Additionally, Rep. Buddy Carter, Savanah Mayor Van Johnson and the FBI have also provided statements about the active shooter at Fort Stewart.

[UPDATE 12:07 p.m. 8/6/2025] Ft. Stewart has been under lockdown status for over an hour. WTOC has crews on the way to the scene and Governor Brian Kemp has issued a statement on social media:

[UPDATE 11:57 a.m. 8/6/2025] Liberty County Schools have also gone on “soft lockdown” in response to the active shooter at Ft. Stewart.

Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School are all currently on lockdown.

[UPDATE 11:51 a.m. 8/6/2025] Ft. Stewart has said that casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing, in a post on social media.

[ORIGINAL STORY] The Commander of Fort Stewart has issued a lockdown in the 2ABCT area of Fort Stewart including Wright and Evans Army Airfield, as well as the Fort Stewart Schools.

Law enforcement has confirmed there is an active shooter on the scene. Four people have been taken to the hospital and one suspect has been identified by law enforcement.

Community Superintendent Brian Perry issued a statement to Kessler Elementary School, Murray Elementary School, and Diamond Elementary School which reads:

Per DOD alert the commander of Fort Stewart has issued a lock down. Diamond, Kessler, and Murray Schools are all in a lock down at this time. There is no immediate threat to the schools at this time. We will send a message when an all clear is announced.

WTOC has contacted Ft. Stewart and was told that they are assessing the threat and will provide updates as they become available.

The 2nd Brigade area is also on lockdown and all gates on Fort Stewart are currently closed.

Fort Stewart officials advise the community to lockdown facilities immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.

They say to keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership.
