A host of rookies and younger players will be tasked with trying to impress the coaching staff in an attempt to make the final roster for 2025. But as we know, starters rarely see the field, if at all, in preseason, which has now become the normal thing for franchises to guard against injuries to their star players.
And for the Steelers, they have already decided on a group of players who will not be suiting up for their first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Per Mark Kaboly, Tomlin listed a host of players that won’t be playing, and they include Aaron Rodgers, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, D.K. Metcalf, Jonnu Smith, Pat Freiermuth, Jaylen Warren, and Jalen Ramsey, among others.

So there will be a big chunk of star power missing, and in truth, we can’t say we are surprised at all, and as Tomlin stated, those players need less of a runway to get going ahead of the regular season.
There is no reason to risk any starters, or those Tomlin deems critical to the team’s success in 2025, over a meaningless preseason game, when it is the ideal chance for rookies and those on the roster bubble to showcase their skills.
So, there you have it, with the Steelers finally getting ready to play some football, a bunch of stars will be on the sidelines.
