The shorthanded Celtics pulled off their fifth straight win on Monday night with a 114-108 victory over the Utah Jazz following a historic performance by Sam Hauser. The sharpshooting forward made franchise history in his spot start by making seven 3-point field goals in the third quarter, helping the hosts secure the victory.
Boston played without three regulars (Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis) for the matchup but they still had enough to beat a Jazz squad that has now lost six consecutive games.
Both teams played a competitive first half but Hauser helped the Celtics build a massive lead in the third quarter by scoring 23 of his career-high 33 points in the period. Jaylen Brown chipped in with 24 points, eight rebiounds and seven assists. Derrick White also added a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists in the victory. John Collins had a team-high 28 points for the Jazz in the setback.
Boston led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter before the Jazz made things interesting in the final frame with a 12-0 run to open the quarter. Utah eventually tied the game with three minutes remaining after some some red-hot shooting (12-of-16 to open the frame) before the Celtics put the game away with a 9-1 run late.
The Celtics will close out their seven-game homestand against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night.
Here are four takeaways from the Celtics’ win on Monday night:
Sam Hauser outscores Jazz in the third quarter: The sharpshooter got the spot start in Jayson Tatum’s absence and shook off a tough shooting start with a sensational third quarter. The forward erupted for 23 points in the third quarter, setting a new career-high with seven 3-point makes in the frame on terrific efficiency (7-of-10 from beyond the arc. His outburst helped the hosts turn a competitive game at halftime into a rout as Hauser outscored the Jazz (22 points) all by himself amid a 37-point quarter for Boston. Hauser finished just two 3-point makes shy of the NBA record for most in a quarter held by Klay Thompson and set a new franchise record for most 3s in a quarter.
Defense lets up in fourth quarter: The Celtics have had a habit of letting big leads slip away for parts of this season and that trend continued Monday night. Boston took their foot off the gas defensively as Utah knocked down 12 of their first 16 shots of the fourth quarter including 7-of-8 from 3-point range to tie up the game with a 34-13 run. Boston’s offense ultimately did enough to put away the game but it wasn’t a pretty finish to a win that should have probably been a blowout.
Celtics give wise rest to some regulars: With Jayson Tatum (45 minutes) and Al Horford (37 minutes) coming off a very heavy workload against the Lakers on Saturday night, Boston began the first of likely many strategic rest over the final 18 games of the year. It was the second rest for Tatum in the past week while Horford will certainly get another night off later this week as Boston has a road back-to-back set in Miami and Brooklyn.
A business-like homestand: It was a rough start for the seven-game homestand two weeks ago with a loss against the Cavaliers. Since then, Boston has recovered quite nicely with five straight wins despite playing without Kristaps Porzingis for the entire homestand. This Celtics team is gearing up for the postseason next month by playing some of their best basketball of the season when motivated. This is a promising development for a team that surprisingly struggled at home at many points during the first half of the season.
