Patriots sign veteran receiver with ties to Josh McDaniels

The Patriots are adding depth to their receiver room with a player that Josh McDaniels knows well.

According to a source, the Patriots are signing veteran receiver Mack Hollins to a 2-year contract worth $8.4 million that can go up to a maximum of $10.4 million. Hollins, 31, spent last season in Buffalo, where he caught 31 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns.

This move reunites Hollins with McDaniels. In 2022, the receiver had his best season with the Patriots offensive coordinator, finishing with 57 receptions, 690 yards, and five touchdowns. At 6-foot-4, 221 pounds, Hollins gives the Patriots a bigger outside receiver and red zone target for Drake Maye.

A fourth-round pick in 2017, Hollins spent his first five seasons in Philadelphia and Miami. In 2022, he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders and excelled in McDaniels’ system. Hollins finished second on the Raiders in receptions (57), receiving yards (690 yards), and receiving touchdowns (four).

The best game of Hollins career came that year against Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans. In Week 3, of the 2022 season, Hollins caught eight passes for 158 yards and a touchdown against Vrabel’s defense.

Now, Hollins will compete with the likes of Kendrick Bourne, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Javon Baker. His biggest competition will be Boutte, who was the Patriots X-receiver last season.

The Patriots have been to looking to upgrade their receiver room. On Monday, the team targeted Pro Bowler Chris Godwin, according to a source. However, despite reportedly offering the veteran more money, Godwin opted to re-sign with Tampa Bay.

The Patriots will likely continue to search for a No. 1 receiver.
