Colts free agent C Ryan Kelly signing with new team

Now former Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly is reportedly signing with the Minnesota Vikings.

According to Ian Rapoport, this is a two-year deal worth $18 million.

A reunion between Kelly and the Colts never quite seemed to be in the cards. Over the last 12 months, no reported contract extension talks ever seemed to take place, and in addition to that, the Colts drafted Kelly’s potential replacement last April when they selected Tanor Bortolini in the fourth round of the NFL draft.

Kelly was a first-round pick by the Colts in the 2016 NFL draft and has been a stabilizing force in the middle of the offensive line and on the team as a whole during his tenure in Indianapolis, where Kelly was also a multiple-time team captain.

Over the last three seasons, Kelly has the fourth-lowest pressure rate allowed among centers, according to PFF’s metrics.

Last season in run-blocking grade, he ranked 25th, although Jonathan Taylor did eclipse the 125-yard mark in Weeks 16-18 when Kelly returned to the lineup from injury. Prior to that, Taylor had only rushed for over 100 twice in the previous five games without Kelly.

As alluded to, Bortolini will likely slide into that starting center spot with Kelly now in Minnesota.

Bortolini ranked 15th in PFF’s pass-blocking efficiency metric and was 22nd out of 40 centers in run-blocking grade.
