- Indeed they did, Richard.
- Uefa did not present Cristian Romero, Son Heung-min or Rodrigo Bentacur with a medal on the field having seemingly run out yesterday evening.
- However, Uefa has since released a statement: “To our great displeasure, we did not have enough medals available on stage during the trophy ceremony presentation due to an unexpected discrepancy in the player count, as more team members – including injured players – participated in the ceremony than initially anticipated.
- “The missing medals were promptly delivered to the winning team in the dressing room, along with our sincerest apologies for the oversight.”

- South Koreans are celebrating Tottenham captain Son Heung-min after he led the Spurs to its first trophy in 17 years.
- Many said they felt a deep sense of pride when they saw Korea’s flag draped around the 32-year-old, shortly after Tottenham won the Europa League championship in Spain on Wednesday, with one online user saying they “almost burst into tears” and another calling him a “national treasure”.
- Son has said the win made him feel like a “legend” and the “happiest man in the world.”
- It was also the first piece of silverware of Son’s senior career. He has never won anything in Germany with Hamburg or Bayer Leverkusen, nor with South Korea’s international team.
- “The scene of you holding the trophy while wearing the Taegeukgi (flag) was deeply moving,” read one comment on Naver News, South Korea’s largest news aggregate website.
- “It was obviously a team effort abut I’m so proud of him achieving these results. He worked so hard for it,” said another comment.
- Son thanked South Korean fans who stayed up late to watch the game live from Spain, which is behind South Korea by seven hours.
- He apologised for “taking so long” to finally win a trophy.
- “I hope those who don’t like me will come to like me more because of this trophy,” he told South Korean television.
- One commenter summed it up by saying: “These days, politics, economy… everything has been frustrating, but Son Heung-min is a breath of fresh air.”

- “I want everyone to enjoy tonight and what it means because you are all, every single one of you, deserve it from the bottom of my heart. I have never been more proud to be the manager of a football club than the manager of these players and the people with me.
- “You, the families – I played a video before the game and it inspired them to win this game today. Every single one of them is a champion. Well done and enjoy the night.”

- Tottenham Hotspur’s social media team were having fun last night after the club’s Europa League win against Tottenham Hotspur. These are some of the best bits from what they had to say as they responded to years of jokes and memes.
- Tottenham responded to Domino’s Pizza UK’s post on X , externalfrom 9 February stating that they have “sold 78,427,391 pizzas since Spurs last won a trophy.” Their response:
- “How many now lads? x”
- Tottenham players such as James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Mikey Moore and others also lined up in the dressing room with the Champions League music blasting in the background as a nod to the club’s return to Europe’s premier club competition. They captioned it on X, external by saying:
- “Are you ready for us, Champions League?”
- Another meme that the club’s X, external account posted was a picture of zero and captioned it by saying –
- “0 days since last time Spurs won a trophy.”
- Another meme on X , externalwas a picture of the players lifting the Europa League trophy with the caption –
- “Warra trophy.”
- This simply means “what a…”, but in a sarcastic, mocking way. The club was trolled for years due to their inability to win a trophy and counting Champions League qualification or a runner-up achievement as success. So, it was only fitting that the club responded to the trolls after winning their first trophy in 17 years.
- Oldham to win the National League play-off final then?

- “Let’s say, I’m a legend. Why not? Only today!
- “17 years nobody has done it with such amazing players and today is the day and I will say I’m a legend of this club, let’s enjoy and celebrate.
- “It feels amazing, this is what I’ve always dreamed for and today is the day the dream came true. I am so happy, happiest man in the world.

- After last night’s game, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel grabbed James Maddison to do an interview for CBS Sports, for whom ex-United captain Roy Keane is a pundit.
- Maddison was injured so didn’t play and said he “wasn’t going to do any interviews… but then I heard it was with Roy Keane.”
- Micah Richards then asked Maddison to do his trademark darts celebration and he obliged, saying: “With pleasure. Roy Keane, that’s for you son.”
- Keane had criticised Maddison earlier this year, before Maddison scored the only goal in Tottenham’s home win over United in February and celebrated by putting a finger to his lips.

- He also added three laughing emojis for good measure.
- Ange Postecoglou’s second-season claim was bold, but it’s worked out. And Maddison loves it.

- Back in February I sent in a message that Spurs’ season was done following their elimination from the Carabao Cup, as at the time that seemed their only realistic chance of silverware and success. How wrong I, and many others, clearly were. I have no idea if Tottenham will stick with Ange, or even if they should, but that’s an issue for next season where they will start in the same position as every other Premier League team. Enjoy the celebration Spurs fans, it’s been a long time coming.

- I’m an Arsenal fan and even I, after the season they’ve had, have to say well done to Postecoglou and if Levy was intelligent he’d now invest to try and get them somewhere in the Champions League. History says otherwise though.
- Pains me to say this as an Arsenal fan – well done Spurs. The drought is over. You have a trophy – dare I say your Euro record outshines ours. That’s where it ends but credit where credit is due. United are further away than most thought. Shaw, Mount, Casemiro – all questionable selections. Dreadful.

- Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou delivered an honest answer with regard to when he started prioritising Europa League during last night’s post-match news conference: “I think when we got to the end of January – the end of the transfer window and assessed our situation – I made a decision there and then that this was the trophy we were going to go for.
- “It was at odds with what other people believed at the time we should do and that’s understandable but I really believed we could win this.
- “Everything we’ve done since then, everything we’ve done in training and the teams I’ve selected were making sure that when these games came around that we were in the best possible position to tackle them.
- “That has come at a cost for sure in the league and I have to take responsibility for that, but I just felt the end game of winning something was more important to me and it’s the only way that I was going to do it.”

- I had THE WORST nightmare last night. I dreamt that United were in the Europa League final in an all-or-nothing game and outplayed their opponent on every metric in a dire game where both teams were awful, Onana didn’t even have a save to make, and we still lost to the scrappiest own goal imaginable. In this nightmare, our opponent who won the trophy were Spurs – Spurs of all teams! – and it meant that we didn’t have any European football next year in an absolute disaster that could set the project back massively, and it meant that this already-horrendous-season has no redeemable quality whatsoever. There was no silver lining, no light at the end of the tunnel. I felt much pain, much despair, and a sad realisation that midweek nights next year I won’t be able to watch United playing in Europe even though half the league will be doing so. But thankfully it was just a nightmare, right?

- The story of Tottenham’s campaign starts with the visit of one of European football’s emerging Golden Boys.
- It is a little known secret that Spurs’ preparations for the 2024-25 campaign started with a visit from Desire Doue.
- The young attacker, then of Rennes, was so intrigued by Postecoglou’s project that he dashed across the Channel to make an undercover viewing of the club’s training ground in Enfield amid optimism that a deal for the young attacker was achievable.
- Fast-forward nine months and Doue – who signed for Paris St-Germain – is preparing for a Champions League final.
- In retrospect, Spurs’ failure to lure the 19-year-old was the sign of what was to come – the start of a series of blows during a truly forgettable domestic season.
- It was intriguing then that Postecoglou says that once the January window closed that he decided he would focus the team’s attentions on winning the Europa League.
- He candidly admitted that his approach was “at odds” with certain people at the club. That was a stark confession and a clear indication of why – despite lifting a trophy – Postecoglou’s future is still under threat.
- You need only look at the Premier League table to ascertain how putting all their eggs in the European basket affected Spurs’ domestic form.
- Equally, however, how do you tell Postecoglou he was wrong to prioritise the Europa League after what unfolded on Wednesday?

- Ange Postecoglou may well agree with you there, Mark.
- He was eager to point out the impact winning a trophy could, or maybe eve should, have on Tottenham’s future after making good on his “always win a trophy in my second season” claim: “People misinterpreted me. It was not me boasting, just me making a declaration and I believed it. I had this thing inside me more than anything else.
- “I know our league form has been unacceptable, but coming third was not going to change this football club, winning a trophy would, that was my ambition and I was prepared to wear it if it did not happen.
- “People kept reminding me of it because we were getting closer, but I’m happy with that.”

- Very happy Spurs fan. I hope the club back Ange – the squad has proven it can play in Europe or the league but not both, this is the time for Levy to open the cheque book. - Ange Postecoglou’s relationship with the press has been somewhat fractious this season.

- More from Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou on his future beyond this season: “I would be disappointed if we don’t continue on this path. It is difficult to buy into one person’s vision. I have been a serial winner. I know people dismiss what I have won because it didn’t happen here, but they were hard earned.
- “There is huge relief. You carry the weight of responsibility and 150 times I have been a spokesman for this club.

- We are proud of Ange here in Melbourne. I hope he sings a certain Manfred Mann song today.
- If not Ange, then who? Mourinho and Conte struggled, so if they got a new manager in then it’s a new project and another 2-3 years anyway. I think Ange has earned the right to see it through and the players will be on board now too, if they weren’t already!
- As an Arsenal fan it’s hard to see your bitter rival win silverware and the match was barely entertaining, but I’m so happy for Ange, he deserves this and they should stick with him next season because he is a true winner, he’s proved it.

- Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was asked about his future in his post-match news conference: “I’ve had such a laser focus on winning this, whatever happens, happens.
- “I’m the manager of the football club, that decision is not in my hands. All I know is having this [medal] around my neck means we have won a trophy. I don’t feel I have completed the job.
- “We’re still building this team. It’s a young team, we need to add experience and now we are in the Champions League. I’ve been trying to build a team that can be challenging for the next four or five years.
- “Since I came here I had the belief of trying to win something and we have done that and I want to build on it.”

- Nathaniel, a man that just saw his team hand Spurs their first trophy in 17 years
- I have no sympathy for Manchester United. Their attitude and performances in the league have been awful this year and they saw the Europa League as a shortcut to earning a Champions League spot. Now they have to face the cold reality. 16th in the league, no European football next season and an aging squad.

- The Spurs players clearly bought into what they were asked to do. Last night, and through the season, Spurs players have complimented Ange and defended him. If Levy decides Ange must go, it may not be a popular decision with the players.
- It would be so Spursy to sack a manager that has won our first trophy in 17 years. The injuries were a big reason why the Premier League season didn’t go to plan and in the latter stages of the season, when players returned from injury, the Europa League was the only thing left to play for. He needs to start as manager next season and see how it goes.
- Ange did a cracking job in his first season with what he had, which tee’d him up for the Europa League this year. Say what you want about him, the guy put his money where his mouth is. 100% deserves a third year imo.

- Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes also discussed his possible exit from Old Trafford, saying he would be willing to leave if the club wanted to “do some cashing in”:

- “I have nothing to show to the fans,” said Amorim, after defeat ensured United would miss out on European football next season.
- “So, in this moment it is a little bit of faith.
- “Let’s see. I am always open. If the board and fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation.
- “But I will not quit. I am really confident in my job. And as you see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.”

- There were certainly plenty of doubters that this Tottenham side could show the kind of grit and determination required to clinch a first piece of silverware in 17 years and first European trophy since 1984 following a disastrous league campaign.
- Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs went into Wednesday’s Europa League final down in 17th place in the Premier League having lost 21 of their 37 games.
- Reports suggest that the Australian may yet lose his job as manager, yet their run to the Europa League final in Bilbao showed that this group was capable of defying expectation when it mattered.

- Don’t worry, we won’t be going through a blow-by-blow account of Wednesday night’s Europa League final.
- The only details you really need to know is that Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side put in a determined display after getting their noses in front with a scrappy first half goal from Brennan Johnson that befitted the quality of the game.
- Micky van de Ven defied physics with an acrobatic goal-line clearance from a Rasmus Hojlund header in the second half, while Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario sealed victory with a smart save late in the game to keep out a header from Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.
