Former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is being considered as an option for the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a new report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Schefter, citing league sources, said early Monday morning that Rodgers “has emerged as a quarterback option in Pittsburgh” and the Steelers and he are expected to talk “and explore a union.”
“The idea of Rodgers playing for Mike Tomlin is in play,” Schefter added.
Schefter reports that the Steelers are still having discussions with pending free agent quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, who both started games for the team last season.
The news of Rodgers emerging as a potential candidate for the Steelers comes less than one day after it was reported that the Steelers were trading for wide receiver DK Metcalf and giving him a new contract worth $150 million.
Rodgers, 41, is expected to be released by the New York Jets when the NFL’s league year begins later this week.
Prior to spending two seasons with the Jets, 4-time MVP and Super Bowl XLV champion quarterback played 18 seasons for the Green Bay Packers and currently sits 7th on the NFL’s all-time passing yards list.
