What does the new Brock Purdy contract mean for Commanders' Jayden Daniels?

The insanity continues in the NFL.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback, on Friday, agreed to terms with the 49ers on a deal that reportedly will pay him $265 million over five years.

So, is the NFL nation now to believe Purdy is worthy of Lamar Jackson money? Here we go again, as the next quarterback up for a new contract continues to be given a contract for more than he is worth. Make that, much more than he is worth.

Purdy and the 49ers were 6-11 last season. Yes, there were many injuries, and yes, this revealed that Purdy needs others to be healthy. This is the best situation for Purdy, who, remember, was the last player drafted (262 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft.

As soon as the contract was announced, I instantly thought, “Well then, what in the world is Jayden Daniels going to be worth when he gets his new contract?” Then I thought, is Jayden going to demand he gets every penny he can, and consequently, put the Commanders in salary cap trouble?

Purdy wins when he delivers and when he has healthy players available to the offense. The Commanders win more because they have Jayden Daniels. Please, I didn’t say “only” because they have Jayden Daniels, but I did say “because….” Daniels last year admitted that OC Kliff Kingsbury was a huge part of the success of the entire offense.

Yet, Brock Purdy is not Jayden Daniels. But then again, is Purdy actually worth $53M a year? It’s crazy to think that if you named 11 NFL quarterbacks who average over $50M a year, Brock Purdy is one of them?
