Live updates: Power outages after storm in Centre County, PA

Tens of thousands of Centre County homes remain without power Wednesday morning after a severe storm rolled through the area Tuesday evening, bringing down trees and power lines.

Local schools — including all of those in the State College Area School District — announced closures Wednesday due to power outages and road closures.

Power outages

As of 7:30 a.m., West Penn Power’s website shows 32,084 customers are without power. The outages are scattered throughout the county, and include 7,973 in State College Borough, 4,984 in Patton Township, 6,600 in Ferguson Township, 1,352 in Bellefonte Borough and 1,214 in Benner Township. The website includes no estimated time for restoration.

Road closures

With a number of downed trees and power lines, roads are closed throughout the county. As of 7:30 a.m., that includes:

  • West College Avenue between Whitehall Road and Bristol Avenue (PennDOT called this a “longer-term closure” due to several downed utilities)
  • Westerly Parkway at Sparks Street
  • State Route 144 at Askey Road
  • Chestnut Grove Road/Bush Hollow Road between Ammerman Road and Spotts Road
  • State Route 144 between Upper Georges Valley Road and Short Road
  • Bell Hollow Lane/Fowler Hollow Road between S. Mountain Road and Bald Eagle Valley Road

School closures

  • All State College Area schools are closed Wednesday, with SCASD notifying families that there are power outages at six of its 12 schools.
  • Bald Eagle Area School District has a flexible instruction day.
  • In the Bellefonte Area School District, Marion-Walker Elementary School will be operating as a Flexible Instruction Day today.
  • Our Lady of Victory Catholic School is closed.
  • Penn State has announced no changes to its schedule.
