Chatham community gathers to honor children killed in tragic crash

CHATHAM, Ill. (WICS) — The Village of Chatham came together in a heartfelt vigil to honor the four children who lost their lives in a tragic crash on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred when an SUV drove through the YNOT afterschool site, leaving the community in mourning.

Hundreds of residents gathered at Village Square Park, wearing red hats, pants, shirts, and socks as a symbol of support for the grieving families. Attendees exchanged hugs, shared stories, and offered well wishes as they sought comfort in one another.

“You know, I think in these times we can all relate, we all have our stories, and we all have had tragedies in our lives. And this just brings everyone together and let’s them be able to cope and heal together,” said Meredith Ferguson, a community member.

Speakers at the vigil encouraged the community to support each other during this difficult time. The American Red Cross and local church members were present to provide emotional support to those in attendance.

With electric candles in hand, the Chatham community is striving to grieve and heal together. Another vigil is scheduled to be held at Glenwood High School’s football field on Wednesday night.
