Can you smell what the Rock is cooking? Did you ever think it would be a heartbreaking A24 movie while sporting a full head of hair? Dwayne Johnson is practically unrecognizable as UFC fighter Mark Kerr in an upcoming biopic, The Smashing Machine, written and directed by Benny Safdie, one-half of the sibling duo behind Uncut Gems. “You’re probably looking at my eyes,” a bruised Kerr begins in the trailer, to an older woman looking as perplexed as we are at the new look from Johnson. Alongside his girlfriend, Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt), Kerr attempts to fight the ban on UFC fighting in over half of the states in the U.S. while trying to find other ways to fight, like competing in Japan. He’s also tackling his personal battle with his addiction to painkillers, and it’s clearly not going well — Staples tearfully takes a photo of Kerr as she tries to support him throughout the career transition. The Smashing Machine is out in theaters on October 3. Put your dukes up.
