After seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, defensive end Sam Hubbard announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday.Hubbard, 29, played his entire career with his hometown team after being selected out of Ohio State in the 2018 NFL Draft.A graduate of Archbishop Moeller High School, Hubbard had 38.5 career sacks, 236 solo tackles and six forced fumbles in his career.Hubbard also delivered one of the most memorable moments in Bengals history when he returned a fumble 98 yards for a touchdown as the Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card round in 2023.”As a kid growing up in Southwest Ohio, Cincinnati has always been, and always will be, home to my family and me. I bled orange and black before I ever put on a Bengals jersey,” Hubbard said.Hubbard’s impact went beyond the football field. In 2021 and 2022, he was the Bengals’ nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. His foundation, the Sam Hubbard Foundation, was started with the goal of bringing equitable access to food, education and a healthy lifestyle for all Cincinnatians.Several Cincinnati staples posted reactions on social media after Hubbard announced his retirement.The Reds responded to Hubbard’s post on X, thanking the veteran for the time he spent playing in the Queen City.”Thank you for everything you’ve done for our city and community, Sam. We wish you nothing but the best in this next chapter,” the Reds’ response said.Skyline Chili also responded to Hubbard’s retirement, wishing him luck as he moves into the next phase of his life.”Thank you for everything you’ve done for the city of Cincinnati and the @Bengals, Sam! Good luck on your next journey and we’ll see you around,” Skyline’s post read.
