Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow leaves second consecutive start with injury

LOS ANGELES — Here things go again for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow. The All-Star right-hander exited his second consecutive start due to right shoulder discomfort Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with manager Dave Roberts and head athletic trainer Thomas Albert bolting from the dugout as soon as Glasnow completed his warmups to start the second inning.

For the Dodgers and Glasnow, the high-priced, high-upside starter who has dealt with a litany of ailments even in his short time in Los Angeles, it was a concerning sight.

Glasnow exited almost immediately after Roberts and Albert arrived at the mound. Rookie Ben Casparius relieved him. Glasnow threw 17 pitches, surrendering solo home runs to Andrew McCutchen and Enmanuel Valdez.

This comes exactly a week after Glasnow exited a start against the Texas Rangers in Arlington after one pitch in the fifth inning due to cramping in both of his calves. Roberts said Sunday morning that Glasnow received an IV on Saturday to help prevent the issue from cropping up again in his start against the Pirates.

“Just kind of getting his body hydrated,” Roberts said. “All the work leading up to today is good. So for me and the training staff, there’s no concern going into this start. He looks good there.”

Glasnow had dealt with cramping issues before, including leaving an April start last year in the seventh inning against the Toronto Blue Jays with cramping in his hands.

“I don’t know,” Glasnow said last week of the cause of the cramping. “I’m not quite sure. I’ve done all the hydration stuff. I do all the supplements. I’m not sure. I think we’ll try and figure some stuff out soon. And just hopefully it doesn’t happen again.”

Glasnow was making his fifth start of his second season with the Dodgers after arriving in a megadeal in December 2023 and promptly signing a nine-figure extension. His ERA sits at 4.50. The right-hander missed all of last October due to what the team called a sprained right elbow, but Glasnow has said he has not dealt with any elbow trouble since.
