Former Michigan running back Donovan Edwards has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New York Jets after the 2025 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported. Edwards spent four seasons at Michigan, where he amassed 50 career appearances.
In the 2024 campaign, Edwards tallied 128 carries for 589 yards and four touchdowns. He also reeled in 18 catches for 83 yards and a score. For his efforts, he was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection.
Fans had massively high expectations for Edwards heading into the season. After all, he was the cover athlete on the long-awaited EA Sports College Football 25 videogame. Nonetheless, his senior season with the Wolverines was far from his best.
Edwards had his best season in 2022 when he recorded a career-high 991 rushing yards, 200 receiving yards and nine total touchdowns. Edwards was Blake Corum‘s backup in Michigan’s run to the national championship in the 2023 campaign, but he still played a pivotal role in the Wolverines’ success.
In fact, he became the first player in CFP National Championship Game history to run for multiple touchdowns of 40-plus yards. Moreover, he boasts the second- and third-longest touchdown runs in CFP title game history.
Donovan Edwards played high school football at West Bloomfield (MI), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 34 overall player and No. 2 running back in the 2021 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Edwards impressed scouts at the NFL Scouting Combine this spring when he ran a speedy 4.4-second 40-yard dash with a 1.51-second 10-yard split. Additionally, Edwards notched a stunning 38.5-inch vertical jump.
While most experts don’t believe Edwards will be a star at the next level, many of them are confident he can carve out a role at the next level. Ahead of the draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein provided an in-depth analysis of Edwards’ NFL potential.
“A well-built runner with good size, Edwards gets what is blocked for him but lacks creativity and play traits to find pro yardage on a consistent basis,” Zierlein wrote. “He won’t wiggle his way around tacklers but puts in an honest effort each snap and falls forward for additional yardage.
“He’s an adequate pass catcher whose protection improved greatly in 2024. Edwards offers toughness but a modest ceiling as an average three-down backup.”
