One second-round trade wasn’t enough for Detroit, which moved up a second time.
The Lions made another swap and went with a diamond in the rough by selecting Arkansas wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa with the sixth pick of the third round, No. 70 overall, in the 2025 NFL draft on Friday night.
TeSlaa, a former standout quarterback at Hudsonville Unity Christian, spent three seasons at Division II Hillsdale College. Back-to-back monster years and measurables led him to Arkansas, where he posted 62 catches for 896 yards and five touchdowns over the last two seasons.
“I don’t understand why Isaac TeSlaa didn’t have more targets at Arkansas,” ESPN analyst Louis Riddick said. “They just didn’t use this guy, but I can guarantee Detroit and Jared Goff are going to say ‘I’ve got a (6-4), 214-pound slot guy who runs 4.43, plays like he’s 180 pounds. Are you kidding me? This guy’s got juice, man. He’s got courage, he’s got a huge catch radius and once he catches the ball, he’s out the gate.”
TeSlaa being drafted by Detroit is a fitting step in a wild journey. During the NFL Scouting Combine, he called himself a “big time” fan of the Lions and went to the 2023 NFC Championship game loss to San Francisco. TeSlaa is now a member of his home state team looking to win a Super Bowl.
“The mismatch on the inside with his size and physicality is going to be a problem for people, for defensive backs in the NFL” Riddick said of TeSlaa. “Picture him now with Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery – they have got some dudes. They’re just getting better and better up there in Detroit. This is a big-time pickup for them.”
