The National Hurricane Center on Sunday said a system in the eastern Atlantic could become a tropical depression soon while continuing to keep tabs on one other Atlantic system.
As of the NHC’s 2 p.m. tropical outlook, the system dubbed Invest 97 continued to show signs of organization with expanded showers and thunderstorms as it was about 100 miles east of the Cape Verde Islands.
“Only a small increase in the organization could lead to the formation of a tropical depression before the low moves near or across the Cape Verde Islands Sunday night and on Monday,” forecasters said. “Even if a tropical depression does not form over the next day or so, environmental conditions appear very conducive for later development, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form by the middle to latter portion of this week while moving west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.”
Either way, the system is forecast to bring heavy rainfall across the Cape Verde Islands through Monday.
The NHC gave it a 50% chance to develop in the next two days and 90% in the next seven.
The second system, a trough of low pressure located in the central Atlantic, has disorganized showers and thunderstorms and diminished chances for organization.
“Some gradual development is possible during the middle part of this week while the system moves northward over the central Atlantic,” forecasters said,
The NHC gave it a 10% chance to develop in the next two days and 20% in the next seven.
The next names on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season list are Erin and Fernand.
The season so far has produced four tropical storms with the most recent, Tropical Storm Dexter, having moved through the North Atlantic this week where it was no threat to land.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this week updated its season forecast now calling for 13-18 named storms for the year, of which five to nine would grow into hurricanes. Two to five of those would develop into major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher.
The height of hurricane season runs from mid-August into October.
The entire six-month season runs June 1 to Nov. 30.
