Braelon Allen: Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has said that there will be a three man rotation at running back between Allen, Breece Hall, and Isaiah Davis. I think that’s possible at the start of the season as the Jets will want to avoid putting too big of a workload on anybody early in the year. I’m not convinced there will be enough carries for three guys as we get deeper into the season. Thus I feel like there is an unofficial position battle that could carry into the season to be the number two back behind Breece Hall. It seemed to me like Allen scored a positive grade in this one. He ran hard to get his 33 yards on 8 attempts.
Leonard Taylor: A year ago Taylor secured a roster spot with a strong preseason. This year he is looking to show that the is deserving of more playing time. He looked tough to block, and a strip sack that resulted in a touchdown should help his cause.
Jay Tufele: Tufele is another guy looking to earn playing time at defensive tackle, and he put a sack and a half on the board.
Qwan’tez Stiggers: With all of the additions the Jets made at cornerback in the offseason, there has been speculation that Stiggers could be an odd man out from the secondary. With playing time at cornerback blocked, his best chance at sticking could come on special teams. If that’s the case, the preseason opener was a big positive. He recorded a pair to tackles to pin Green Bay deep. One came on a kickoff. Another came on a punt which stuck the Packers in the shadow of their own goal line.
Ja’Markis Weston: Weston is unlikely to ever see the field for the Jets on offense or defense. He will make the roster or get cut based on how well he plays special teams. If that’s the case, Saturday night made the former more likely. He recorded a pair of tackles and recovered a muffed punt.
Stone Smartt: It’s wise to not go too crazy over plays made in the second half of preseason games. Still, the Jets are an offense likely to lean into the screen game at a high rate this year given their quarterback and wide receiver situations. A tight end who can weave through traffic on a screen, even against backups, and turn it into a 24 yard touchdown will draw attention.
Adrian Martinez: Martinez is battling Brady Cook for the third and final roster spot at quarterback. My eyeball test said he looked more comfortable in the pocket with greater command of the offense and had more zip on his throws. The stat sheet said he finished with a very solid stat line of 11 for 16 for 152 yards and a touchdown.
Harrison Mevis: I’m not sure there is anything Mevis can do to be the Jets’ Week 1 kicker now that Nick Folk is in town. All Mevis can do is succeed when presented with opportunities, and that is what he did by connecting on all three of his field goals and both of his extra points.
Donovan Edwards: Edwards is trying to show the coaching staff that he is worth keeping at running back. He looked tough to bring down, compiling 42 yards on 9 carries. A holding penalty wiped out a 73 yard touchdown run and robbed Edwards of a monster preseason stat line. Still, that run displayed the homerun gear that Edwards has.
