Corey Ballentine leaves game injured
Christopher Kuhagen and Tom Silverstein
Cornerback Corey Ballentine was forced to the bench after making a tackle on the sideline with the Jets on the move again.
It looked like he might have been shaken up, and when he got to the sideline, the trainers were working on his mouth.
He was taken into the blue tent. Ballentine and the Packers just reunited this week.
Ballentine, who spent the previous two years in Green Bay, departed in free agency in March and signed with the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts waived on Aug. 1 and a few days later he was back in Green Bay.

Packers offensive line with five penalties tonight
Ryan Wood
The Packers’ offensive line will need to look itself in the mirror after tonight.
Jacob Monk has gotten a lot of first-team reps with the Packers offensive line with Elgton Jenkins out this offseason. And he now has three holding penalties and allowed a sack tonight.
Now, the latest culprit is Anthony Belton, the Packers’ 2025 second-round draft pick.
It’s the fifth holding penalty on the Packers offensive line tonight.

Jets extend lead to 24-3 on Adrian Martinez touchdown pass to Stone Smartt
Christopher Kuhagen
The Jets have added to their lead with a touchdown drive on their opening possession of the second half.
Adrian Martinez, a former UFL MVP, took over and went 4 of 6 on the drive for 60 yards and a 138.9 rating. It ended with a 24-yard TD pass to Stone Smartt with 6:32 left in the third quarter.
All of the Jets’ three QBs have performed well tonight and have had their way with whoever the Packers defense has thrown out there.
SCORE: Jets 24, Packers 3
9:19 pm CT
Matt LaFleur is not happy with guard Donovan Jennings
Tom Silverstein
Packers coach Matt LaFleur was furious with guard Donovan Jennings over the final play of the team’s opening drive of the second half. It was a three and out.
Offensive line coach Luke Butkus was really giving it to the entire offensive line after they gathered on the bench. Then, LaFleur came over and showed Jennings something on his tablet and was not happy. He stormed off afterward.
It was a third and 10 play and quarterback Sean Clifford had to unload the ball to a checkdown receiver because a pass rusher was coming at him so quickly. It’s been a bad day for the offensive line. The number of holding penalties has been way too high.
9:00 pm CT
Sean Clifford takes over for Packers to begin the second half
Tom Silverstein and Christopher Kuhagen
Malik Willis’s night is over. Sean Clifford is in the game.
Willis finished 4 of 9 for 39 yards and was sacked twice. His passer rating was 57.2.
Clifford is in his third season with the Packers.
He was cut at the end of training camp last season, but the Packers signed him to the practice squad. Clifford, the 27-year-old former fifth-round pick, was elevated to the game day roster for two weeks when Willis started in Jordan Love’s place.

Packers vs Jets halftime stats
Christopher Kuhagen
Here are halftime stats of the Packers-Jets preseason game. The Jets lead the Packers, 17-3, in what has been a very sloppy game for Green Bay in all phases. The Packers offense and special teams both have turnovers, the first-team defense didn’t look good, and the lines have been dominated.
- First downs:Jets 9, Packers 7
- Third down: Jets 3 for 7, Packers 1 for 7
- 4th down:Jets 0 for 1, Packers 0 for 0
- Total plays: Jets 32, Packers 31

Running back Jalen White has injury
Tom Silverstein and Christopher Kuhagen
Running back Jalen White is being taken to the locker room with what appears to be a foot injury.
White is being driven to the locker room while the rest of the team heads in for halftime.
White is a rookie from Georgia Southern. He signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent immediately after the 2025 NFL Draft.
His injury would be the latest for the Packers running backs during training camp. Green Bay is already without backup RBs Emanuel Wilson and MarShawn Lloyd, who are both out with injuries.
8:31 pm CT
Newcomer Isaiah Simmons struggling at linebacker; Jets add to lead with field goal
Tom Silverstein
Another player who has not made a case for himself tonight is linebacker Isaiah Simmons. He’s getting a lot of playing time both on the strong-side with the starter and on the weakside with the No. 2 unit.
His tackling has not been up to snuff.
Simmons missed an open field tackle earlier in the game and then almost gave the Jets a touchdown when he missed a tackle on running back Isaiah Davis on a swing pass in the flat.
Luckily for Simmons, Davis couldn’t keep his balance and stepped on the boundary before running into the end zone. The ball was spotted at the 5-yard line and the Jets kicked a field goal to make it, 17-3.
SCORE:Jets 17, Packers 3 (1:52 left in the second quarter)
8:28 pm CT
Mecole Hardman fumbles a punt, furious with himself after mistake
Tom Silverstein
Mecole Hardman is not going to make the team like this.
Hardman, acquired in the offseason as a free agent, tried to field a bouncing punt but it hit him in the chest and bounced away, allowing the Jets to recover at the 10-yard line. Ouch.
If Hardman is going to try to recover a bouncing punt, he better be sure it’s not going to take an odd bounce. As a veteran, he should know better.
Hardman ran to the sideline without talking to anyone, threw his helmet down and sat on the bench. No one needed to come over and tell him he messed up. The receiver needs to prove himself as a return option if he’s got any shot of making the team.
8:23 pm CT
Packers’ Jacob Munk has rough series
Tom Silverstein
Not a good series for guard Jacob Monk.
First, he got called for holding on what should have been a running first down by Amar Johnson and then he got beat badly at the line and allowed quarterback Malik Willis to get sacked on third and 14.
Willis could have helped Monk out a little by stepping up in the pocket, but with it third and long, he was waiting for one of his receivers to get down the field. It looked like he had a shot at completing a deep ball if Monk could have held his block or Willis had stepped up in the pocket.
The Packers have to punt and still trail 14-3 with 4:34 left in the second quarter.
8:20 pm CT
Who is the Packers defensive coordinator?
Christopher Kuhagen
The Packers’ starting defense did not look sharp against Justin Fields to open the game.
That’s not what second-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley wanted to see in the preseason opener.
But it also gives Hafley a lot to review with his group as preparations continue for the regular season next month.
Hafley, who oversaw a top 10-ranked scoring defense in 2024, arrived to the Packers last year from Boston College where he was the head coach for four years.
8:11 pm CT
Jets recover Malik Willis fumble in end zone for touchdown
Tom Silverstein
The night keeps getting worse for the Packers.
Quarterback Malik Willis got sacked in the end zone and coughed the ball up, allowing Jets defensive tackle Jay Tufeleto recover for a touchdown.
The Jets now lead the Packers, 14-3, with 7:01 left in the second quarter.
It wasn’t Willis’ fault. Center Sean Rhyan let defensive lineman Leonard Taylor beat him to the outside. Willis barely had time to set up before he got the ball knocked out of his hand.
SCORE: Jets 14, Packers 3
8:07 pm CT
Jets showing they’re a tougher team at this point and you can look at new head coach Aaron Glenn as the reason
Tom Silverstein
Under first-year coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets have done a considerable amount of hitting and live tackling in camp.
It’s Glenn’s way of toughening what many thought was a soft Jets team and isn’t too far from what Glenn and coach Dan Campbell did with the Lions.
It’s pretty obvious the Jets are ahead of the Packers when it comes to blocking and tackling. The Packers have missed a considerable amount of tackles and haven’t been as physical on the line of scrimmage.
It’s one reason why coach Matt LaFleur wanted to play his starters in the exhibition opener. He has felt they haven’t performed well in recent season openers after sitting out the preseason.
He also is following new data that says players who take part in exhibition games get hurt a lower percentage of the time early in the season than those who don’t.
8:04 pm CT
Brandon McManus makes 46-yard field goal; Jets lead Packers, 7-3
Christopher Kuhagen, Ryan Wood and Tom Silverstein
The Packers are on the board thanks to the always reliable Brandon McManus.
The 34-year-old kicker drilled a 46-yard field goal after a seven-play, 36-yard drive that Malik Willis led.
McManus is now 49 of 53 in field goals during training camp.
The Jets had two unnecessary roughness penalties on the first two plays of the drive that cost them 30 yards. The biggest play for the Packers on the drive was a 17-yard pass from Willis to tight end John FitzPatrick. That got the Packers to the Jets 21-yard line. But the Packers went backwards from there with a 2-yard loss from Willis and then a 5-yard offsides penalty.
Through three series, quarterbacks Jordan Love and Malik Willis are a combined 3 of 8 for 25 yards. Chris Brooks leads the Packers in rushing with 17 yards on five carries.
7:54 pm CT
Jordan Love’s day is done, Malik Willis taking over
Ryan Wood and Christopher Kuhagen
After two series, Jordan Love’s day is done.
Malik Willis is coming in with 12:52 remaining in the second quarter. There was no way Matt LaFleur was going to let Love take a third drive after seeing his QB1 take a hit on the previous drive.
Those first two drives were far from the way the Packers starting offense wanted to open its preseason.
Love completed just one of his five passes for 7 yards and was sacked once. We’ll have to see if LaFleur will play Love next week against the Indianapolis Colts after a rough preseason opener for the starting offense.
7:50 pm CT
Packers get a defensive stand on 4th down
Tom Silverstein and Ryan Wood
The Packers finally win at the line of scrimmage on fourth and 1 at their own 26.
The Jets decided to go with it and handed the ball off to Allen, who was stopped at the line.
Linebacker Kristian Welch made first contact after slipping through the middle and beating Allen to the line of scrimmage.
That was a good stand from the Packers backup defense.
Now, let’s see if the offense can do anything.
7:45 pm CT
Braelon Allen pounding away at Packers defense
Tom Silverstein
Former Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen is punishing the Packers’ run defense.
The second-year pro got four carries for 31 yards, including gains of 7 and 8 yards on this drive. The Jets have won the line of scrimmage so far.
The Jets have 59 yards rushing on 11 carries.
7:40 pm CT
Jets pull Justin Fields after first series
Tom Silverstein and Christopher Kuhagen
The Jets have pulled starting quarterback Justin Fields.
New head coach Aaron Glenn saw more than enough on his 10-play, 79-yard touchdown drive to start the game.
Fields, in his first year with the Jets after spending last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, went 3 of 4 for 42 yards passing and had two rushes for 14 yards with the rushing touchdown.
Enter Missouri rookie Brady Cook.
The Packers have inserted their No. 2 defense in the game. The only starter who is on the field is linebacker Isaiah Simmons. Bo Melton, who is making the change from wide receiver to cornerback, is now getting his first snaps on defense.
7:35 pm CT
Packers offense doesn’t look good through first two series
Tom Silverstein and Ryan Wood
First-round pick Matthew Golden has been about the only positive on offense through the first two drives.
Golden caught a 7-yard pass on third and 7 to keep the offense’s second drive going. Then on third-and-6, Golden drew a pass interference call on Jets star cornerback Sauce Gardner, giving the Packers another first down.
But the drive stalls and the Packers have to punt again.
Jordan Love was going to make something happen with his feet there on a third-and-4. It looked like he might’ve had a shot at the chains but then he remembered it’s preseason and thought better of it.
Love so far through two possessions: 1-5, 7 yards, 39.6 rating.
7:29 pm CT
Josh Jacobs starts game but leaves after one play
Tom Silverstein
Running back Josh Jacobs started the game but left after one play.
Jacobs’ only snap was a penalty on the Jets. He left the field after the play, and has not returned since.
7:27 pm CT
Zayne Anderson injured on first defensive series
Tom Silverstein
Safety Zane Anderson, filling in for Xavier McKinney, who did not dress for non-injury reason, injured his left leg on the opening drive and left the game.
7:26 pm CT
Justin Fields with a touchdown on first drive
Christopher Kuhagen and Ryan Wood
The Jets strike first.
Justin Fields finished off a 10-play, 79-yard drive with a 13-yard rushing touchdown.
Not a good start for the Packers’ starting defense. The starters included:
- DL Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness
- LB: Edgerrin Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, Isaiah Simmons
- CB: Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine, Javon Bullard
- S: Evan Williams, Zayne Anderson

Romeo Doubs is wearing a Guardian Cap
Christopher Kuhagen
As he did late in the 2024 season, Romeo Doubs is wearing a Guardian Cap to cover his helmet.
He suffered two concussions last season, one during the regular season and another in the Packers’ wild-card playoff game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
7:17 pm CT
Packers punt on first drive after two Jordan Love incompletions
Christopher Kuhagen
The Packers go three and out on their first drive.
Jordan Love looked for Romeo Doubs twice but was incomplete on both attempts, including on a 3rd and 1.
Chris Brooks, who is serving as the backup running back with Emanuel Wilson and MarShawn Lloyd injured, had a 4-yard run on the series. A solid preseason by Brooks could help his cause in making the roster.
7:10 pm CT
Packers begin with the ball and Jordan Love, Josh Jacobs and other starters are playing
Christopher Kuhagen
Jordan Love, along with other starters like Josh Jacobs, are playing in the Packers’ opening series.
The drive is beginning at the 18-yard line after a Packers holding penalty on the kickoff moved the ball back 10 yards
And then a Jets encroachment on the first play gave the Packers 5 yards back.
A bit sloppy by both teams to begin the preseason opener. At least it’s the preseason.

Packers live chat update
Christopher Kuhagen
Hey Packers fans, before we get going on the first preseason game, I just wanted to let everyone know that Tom Silverstein’s popular in-game chat will not take place tonight.
Our previous system no longer allowed for the in-game chats that Silverstein made famous.
But fear not, we’re testing multiple options with the hopes that there is a solution for the Packers’ second preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts next Saturday night on Saturday, Aug. 16.
We know many of you love Silverstein’s chats and so do we.

Packers injury report today for preseason game
Christopher Kuhagen
Several players will not play in tonight’s preseason opener due to injuries. Many of these players have sat out of practices in recent days so their absences are not unexpected.
On defense, Nate Hobbs and Xavier McKinney are expected to miss the rest of training camp with their injuries. Hobbs had surgery to repair a torn meniscus on his right knee and McKinney, a Pro Bowler last season, is battling a calf injury. Quay Walker is working his way back from an ankle injury.
On offense, running backs Emanuel Wilson (bone bruise in knee) and MarShawn Lloyd (groin) have both been out for over a week with their injuries they suffered in practices. Wide receiver Christian Watson, who suffered a torn ACL in the regular season finale last season, remains on the physically unable to perform list.
Here’s the Packers’ full injury report:
- Quay Walker, linebacker
- Christian Watson, wide receiver
- Jayden Reed, wide receiver
- Dontayvion Wicks, wide receiver
- Nate Hobbs, cornerback
- Xavier McKinney, safety
- Emanuel Wilson, running back
- MarShawn Lloyd, running back
- Kamal Hadden, cornerback
- Collin Oliver, defensive line
- Rasheed Walker, offensive tackle
- John Williams, guard
- Savion Williams, wide receiver
6:46 pm CT
Bo Melton getting ready for first game at cornerback
Christopher Kuhagen
One of the players to watch tonight is without question Bo Melton.
Melton has made the rare move in switching positions from wide receiver to cornerback.
So far, through training camp, he’s looked solid and has been all-in on the switch. Head coach Matt LaFleur first approached him about the position change before mini camp in June.
Melton joined the Packers organization late in the 2022 season. He spent much of the 2023 season on the Packers practice squad before being elevated to the main roster on Nov. 23. He spent more of the 2024 season on special teams as his production at wideout dipped.
Now, the 26-year-old is trying to find a spot on the defense. And with veteran Nate Hobbs out for the rest of training camp after surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, Melton could fill a need.

Matthew Golden arrives for first preseason game
Christopher Kuhagen
Wide receiver Matthew Golden makes his way into Lambeau Field for his first preseason game as a professional.
Golden, the team’s prized first-round draft pick, has had a superb training camp, showing off his speed and playmaking abilities.
The Packers’ selection of Golden was the first time the Packers used a first-round pick to take a wide receiver in 23 years.

Packers QB depth chart
Christopher Kuhagen
Jordan Love is expected to play in tonight’s preseason game. Who will come in after him? Malik Willis has returned as Love’s backup and third-year pro Sean Clifford remains in the mix. Then there’s newcomer Taylor Elgersma, who is looking to make an impression.
- Jordan Love – In his third season as QB1 of the Packers and sixth overall season in Green Bay. The 2020 first-round draft pick has led the Packers to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons as the starter. He’s looking for a much healthier season after an injury-filled 2024 season that began with a sprained MCL in his left knee in Week 1. For his career, Love has completed 63.5% of his passes with 60 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
- Malik Willis – In his second season with the Packers. Played in seven games in 2024, including two starts when he filled in for an injured Love early in the season. Was 2-0 as a starter. Showed great poise when called upon. Completed 74.1% of his passes with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Can break through in the pocket. Finished with 20 carries for 138 yards and a rushing TD.
- Sean Clifford– In his third season in the Packers organization. Former Penn State QB spent last season on the practice squad. Elevated to the game day roster for Weeks 2 and 3 in 2024 to serve as Malik Willis’ backup when Jordan Love was out with an injury. Was a fifth round pick by the Packers in 2023 and was Love’s backup his rookie season. But has been supplanted by Willis.
