New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros: Luis Gil vs. Framber Valdez

The current-day Yankees have been quite a bummer of late. Yesterday saw that continue, as Devin Williams continued to struggle, allowing three runs in the top of the 10th to doom the Yankees to a loss to the Astros. At least if that continues today, there will be some good memories to come out of today.

Before today’s real game, Old-Timers’ Day will take place in the Bronx, as they honor the 25th anniversary of the 2000 World Series championship team. Beyond that, this year also marks the return of the actual Old-Timers’ Game after a couple years’ absence.

However once the real game starts, Luis Gil will take the mound for the current Yankees. This will be Gil’s second start back from a long injured list stint. His first start was a struggle, as he allowed five runs in 3.1 innings to the Marlins, but hopefully that was just some rust.

As for the Astros, Framber Valdez will get the ball for them. Valdez has been one of the top starters for Houston in recent years, and that’s continued in 2025, as he’s already near his career best marks in both FanGraphs and Baseball Reference WAR. He’ll almost certainly be a tough out for a Yankees’ offense that’s struggled enough as it is.

Of interest in the lineup today: Giancarlo Stanton taking the field for the first time since September 14, 2023. Normally restricted to DH duty to preserve his health at this point in his career, the Yankees’ hands are a bit tied with Aaron Judge also stuck as a DH for now while his elbow recovers. Don’t expect to see Stanton in the outfield very often, but given the shallow territory in Yankee Stadium and the need for his hot bat, the Yankees will see if they can get away with the slow-moving Stanton out in right.

With the first pitch time a little later than would be normal for a usual Saturday home game, we hope you’ll come join us for the action once things get going!
