TreVeyon Henderson didn’t wait long to make a great impression on New England Patriots fans. Didn’t wait at all, actually.
On the opening kickoff of Henderson’s first preseason game, he took it 100 yards for a touchdown Friday night in New England’s 48-18 victory against the Washington Commanders. That won’t go on his official career stats since it’s the preseason, but it was an instant message to his new team that the playmaking everyone saw from him at Ohio State could be an asset in the NFL as well.

Henderson was a fun second-round draft pick by a Patriots team that is looking to make a big improvement this season. Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, another second-round pick in the NFL Draft, formed a strong running back duo for Ohio State last season. Henderson was considered the shiftier player, with the ability to break any run for a touchdown. The Patriots, who have lacked playmakers on offense in recent seasons, were enticed by that explosive ability.

Before Henderson could take a snap on offense, he showed off his elusiveness. He ran through the Commanders’ special teams for a memorable first touch in the NFL, even if it was just the preseason.

Henderson will have a significant role right away with Rhamondre Stevenson, who will be to Henderson in the pros what Judkins was in college. If Henderson’s first NFL preseason touch is a preview, it will be an exciting addition for New England.
