LIVE UPDATES: 5 soldiers shot in ‘active shooter incident’ at Fort Stewart in Georgia, base confirms

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Five soldiers have been shot in an “active shooter incident” on Fort Stewart in Georgia on Wednesday morning, base officials have confirmed. No fatalities have been reported in the shooting, according to a U.S. official.

A U.S. official told ABC News the shooter was a male soldier. 

Officials said the shooting happened in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, and that wounded soldiers were treated on-site and have since been moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment.

This is no active threat to the community.

Officials said law enforcement was dispatched to the incident at 10:56 a.m. and the shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m. 

The conditions of the soldiers were not immediately available, nor was the shooter’s identity.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River and is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and family members, according to the Associated Press. The base is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia.

The incident remains under investigation and officials said no additional information will be released until the investigation is complete.

ABC News reports the shooter is a male soldier, according to a U.S. official. The official said there were no fatalities reported, and the five wounded soldiers are currently receiving medical care.

The Liberty County System has reported that the “soft lockdown” on their schools has reopened, and there is no threat to the schools. They ask that anyone with questions contact the Fort Stewart Public Affairs Office. 

1:34 p.m. | Location narrowed down 

An emergency dispatch request for mutual aid shows that crews were called to Building 8420 for the 2nd Brigade. 

The building is in the area of Vanguard Road. Maps show this is near the Dental Clinic 4, the Johnson Gym, the North Troop Medical Center and dining facilities.
