Giants trade longtime reliever Tyler Rogers to Mets for three players ahead of Thursday’s deadline

One of the Giants’ longest-tenured players is on the move.

San Francisco traded right-handed relief pitcher Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets for three players, the team announced Wednesday.

The Giants received pitchers Blake Tidwell, José Butto and outfielder Drew Gilbert in return.

San Francisco designated right-handed relief pitcher Sean Hjelle for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster.

Tidwell, a 24-year-old right-handed pitching prospect, posted a 4.10 ERA with 87 strikeouts and 32 walks in 79 innings pitched (17 appearances, 14 starts) for Triple-A Syracuse while posting a 9.00 ERA in 15 major-league innings (four appearances, two starts) with the Mets.

Gilbert, a 24-year-old outfielder, batted .255/.356/.455 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 87 games between New York’s Single- and Triple-A levels this season.

The third player the Giants acquired, Butto, is a 27-year-old relief pitcher at the major-league level who posted a 3.64 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 22 walks in 47 innings pitched this season.

In seven seasons with the Giants, Rogers posted an impressive 2.79 ERA with 296 strikeouts and 74 walks in 396 2/3 innings pitched.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic reported shortly after news of the trade broke, citing sources, that the expectation is other San Francisco relievers soon could be on the move, with closer Camilo Doval recently being made available in trade conversations.
