Fernandes and Cunha were excellent
Manchester United won the first game of their pre-season tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham in New Jersey.
Bruno Fernandes put United 1-0 up from the penalty spot just five minutes in after Rasmus Hojlund had hit the post after 50 seconds. Amad had a goal disallowed for offside as United continued to dominate the first half but they had to settle for a one-goal lead at half time.
Ruben Amorim made no changes at the break and United started the second half as they did the first. Fernandes should have doubled his tally but was denied by Alphonse Areola, but there was nothing the West Ham goalkeeper could do to stop the United captain doubling his side’s lead with a superb curling effort just minutes later.
Jarrod Bowen brought West Ham back into the game with a fine strike but United saw out the 2-1 win.
Here are how the players rated at the MetLife Stadium:
Altay Bayindir
Unconvincingly punched a cross away but gathered Tomas Soucek’s late first-half chance. Well beaten by Bowen. 6
Leny Yoro
Played a superb long-distance pass for Fernandes and again showed why he can be an attacking asset with his distribution. 8
Matthijs de Ligt
Positioned in the middle of the back three, he defended solidly as Yoro and Ayden Heaven had licence to supplement the attack. 7
Ayden Heaven
Won United’s penalty when he latched onto the ball following Areola’s mistake but didn’t cover himself in glory for Bowen’s goal. 6
Amad
Seems set to occupy the right-wing role and had a goal disallowed for offside. Involved in some nice link-up play. 7
Kobbie Mainoo
Looked comfortable back in midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte and was quietly effective during his 65 minutes. 7
Manuel Ugarte
One of his best performances for United in a while. His intensity would have befitted a competitive match. 8
Patrick Dorgu
Continued his development into a more attack-minded winger with some positive charges that unnerved West Ham. 7
Matheus Cunha
Clicked with Fernandes next to him as the other playmaker and created an early chance for Hojlund. Performed positively. 8
Bruno Fernandes
Scored at the MetLife again and was in the thick of it before his classy second. 9
Rasmus Hojlund
Nearly scored inside the first minute when he smacked the post. Had another decent opening but shot high and wide. 6
Subs
Tyler Fredricson
Played on the right of the back three. 6
Harry Maguire
Warmly greeted and defensively dominant. 7
Luke Shaw
Vying with Heaven for the left-sided centre back role. 6
Diogo Dalot
Couldn’t get on the front foot as much as Amad after West Ham scored shortly before the changes. 6
Toby Collyer
Industrious. 6
Casemiro
Provided the defence with a shield. 6
Diego Leon
A quiet 25 minutes. 6
Mason Mount
Did not make much happen. 5
Jack Fletcher
First tour appearance, having gone to the States last year. 6
Chido Obi
Had little of the ball. 5
