These are the players with the most total bases in an MLB game

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Kurtz is the first player in MLB history to go 6-for-6 with four homers in a single contest.

Kurtz’s 19 total bases tied Shawn Green for the most in a single game since at least 1901. But Kurtz bested Green in the RBI department — Green drove in seven runs in his epic performance against the Brewers on May 23, 2002 — while becoming the first rookie to hit four homers in a game.

Total bases are not the first stat you generally look to when you skim a box score. But the figure next to “TB” can tell you a lot about how a hitter performed on a given day.

Here’s a look at the 27 players in MLB history (since 1901) with 16 or more total bases in a single game:

1-T. Nick Kurtz, A’s — 19 on July 25, 2025 at Astros

Kurtz made all kinds of history on this night against the Astros in Houston. He became the first rookie to smash four home runs in a single contest, as well as the first rookie with 19 total bases in a game. He became the first player (rookie or not) with six hits, four homers and eight RBIs in the same game.

It all began with a single to left field off Astros starter Ryan Gusto in the first inning. Then came a two-run shot against Gusto over the left-field wall in the second. In the fourth, he drove another Gusto pitch off the top of the wall in left-center for a double. He homered again in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings off three different relievers.

1-T. Shawn Green, Dodgers — 19 on May 23, 2002 at Brewers

Green was at his peak from 2001-02, when he belted a combined 91 home runs and posted a 154 OPS+ for the Dodgers. Four of them came on a historic day in Milwaukee, when the sweet-swinging left-handed slugger doubled in the first inning, launched a three-run homer in the second, a solo shot in the fourth, another solo homer in the fifth, lined a single to center field in the eighth and belted a third solo homer in the ninth.

In all, Green was 6-for-6 with seven RBIs and 19 total bases, becoming the first player in MLB history with that many total bases in a single game.

3-T. Josh Hamilton, Rangers — 18 on May 8, 2012 at Orioles

Hamilton, no stranger to leaving fans awestruck with his incredible power at the plate, crushed four homers to go along with a double and eight RBIs in Texas’ 10-3 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards.

3-T. Joe Adcock, Milwaukee Braves — 18 on July 31, 1954 at Brooklyn Dodgers

In a 15-7 win over the Dodgers at Ebbets Field, Adcock, a slugging first baseman who would belt 336 home runs during his 17-year Major League career, connected for four of them in addition to a double in a 5-for-5, seven-RBI performance.

5-T. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers — 17 on Sept. 19, 2024 at Marlins

Ohtani delivered a jaw-dropping performance on a night on which he also became the first player in MLB history to hit at least 50 home runs and steal at least 50 bases in the same season. Against the Marlins in Miami, the superstar slugger went 6-for-6 with a single, two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs to enter the record books in emphatic fashion.

5-T. Scooter Gennett, Reds — 17 on June 6, 2017 vs. Cardinals

One of the more surprising names on this list, Gennett — who was listed at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds — raised eyebrows when he had the game of his life against the Cardinals at Great American Ball Park. Gennett went 5-for-5 with a single, four home runs and 10 RBIs.

5-T. Mike Schmidt, Phillies — 17 on April 17, 1976 at Cubs

Before the famous 23-22 game in which the Phillies defeated the Cubs thanks to a 10th-inning homer by Schmidt on May 17, 1979, there was another wild one at Wrigley Field in which Schmidt made history. Three years and a month earlier, Schmidt hit four homers on a 5-for-6 day on which he also drove in eight in Philadelphia’s 18-16 win over Chicago.

5-T. Gil Hodges, Brooklyn Dodgers — 17 on Aug. 31, 1950 vs. Boston Braves

In his age-26 campaign, the first of his career in which he crossed the 30-homer threshold, Hodges slugged four round-trippers as part of a 5-for-6, nine-RBI performance against the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. The future Hall of Famer would finish his illustrious 18-year MLB career with 370 homers.
