Pa. native, Athletics rookie has arguably ‘best game’ in MLB history

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz produced one of the best games in Major League Baseball history on Friday, going 6-for-6 with four home runs, a double and 8 RBIs in a win over the Astros.

The Pennsylvania native homered in the second, sixth, eighth and ninth innings of the Athletics’ 15-3 win. He also singled in the first and double in the fourth. The four home runs in a game ties an MLB record, as does his 19 total bases. Only Shawn Green in 2002 has also reached 19 total bases.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan posted on Twitter following the game that there is an argument to be made that Nick Kurtz had the best game in the history of baseball.

“Never in baseball’s 150-year history has a player finished a game with at least six hits, six runs and eight RBIs until Nick Kurtz tonight,” Passan said. “His 19 total bases tie Shawn Green’s single-game record — and Kurtz had one more RBI. There’s a genuine argument it is the best game ever.”

Nick Kurtz spent one season at Manheim Township in Lancaster, Pa., before transferring to the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. He played college baseball at Wake Forest, before being drafted No. 4 overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.

He made his MLB debut in April and has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball as of late.

In July, he is hitting .425 with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs. Obviously going 6-for-6 with four home runs on Friday helped those numbers.

“It’s arguably the best game I’ve ever watched from a single player,” Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said, per the Associated Press. “This kid continues to have jaw-dropping moments.”

On the season, Nick Kurtz is now hitting .305 with 23 home runs and 59 RBIs — impressive numbers for anyone, let alone a rookie.

“Everybody was just like, laughing,” Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson said, per the AP. “How is he doing it? This is not normal. He’s playing a different sport than us right now. It’s not baseball, it’s just tee ball what he’s doing right now.”
