Cal Raleigh eyes historic MLB Derby glory

ATLANTA — Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has the chance to make history Monday night and continue what has already been a season for the record books in Seattle.

The “Big Dumper” will be one of eight contestants in the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby at Truist Park in Atlanta. Raleigh also will be the starting catcher for the American League in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game, being held at the same venue in Atlanta.

Raleigh could become the first switch-hitter ever to win the event Monday and the first catcher to take the Home Run Derby title. At 38 home runs, Raleigh is first among MLB players as the “first half” of the season comes to an end. He also is ahead of all other players in runs batted in with 82.

Just 19 home runs over the final 66 games would top Ken Griffey Jr. for the most home runs in a single season in Mariners history. Raleigh will be in a race with New York Yankees star Aaron Judge for AL MVP down the stretch of the season.

As far as Monday’s home run derby, Raleigh will be joined by Oneil Cruz, James Wood, Matt Olson, Brent Rooker, Byron Buxton, Junior Caminero and Jazz Chisolm Jr. The four hitters with the most home runs in the first round will advance to the bracket-style semifinals, where the player with the highest total will face the fourth-highest in one matchup and the Nos. 2 and 3 will battle.

Raleigh will hope to replicate the success of teammate Julio Rodriguez in his first Home Run Derby, when the outfielder made a surprise run to the finals before falling to Juan Soto.

Here’s what western Washington fans should know about tuning into Monday night’s Home Run Derby.
