2 killed in Lexington church shooting after trooper shot; suspect killed, officials say

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Lexington Police and Kentucky State Police are investigating multiple shooting scenes in the Lexington area, including a deadly scene that took place at Richmond Road Baptist Church.

Lexington Police say officers were dispatched to a shooting involving a KSP trooper on Terminal Drive at around 11:40 a.m. at Blue Grass Airport on Sunday. Police shared in a press conference that the suspect was initially pulled over due to a license plate alert on traffic cams. The suspect shot the trooper and then immediately fled the scene.

Officials say that while the shooting occurred on Terminal Drive at the airport, it is unrelated to Blue Grass Airport.

Police say the suspect made their way to Belleau Wood Drive, where they then carjacked a vehicle and switched cars, once again fleeing the scene.

The suspect was tracked to Old Richmond Road and exited the vehicle at Richmond Road Baptist Church. Police report that the suspect fired a weapon at individuals on church property.

In an afternoon press conference, Lexington police confirmed multiple victims in the church. The suspect was shot by responding law enforcement and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say four people were shot on church property. Two people were killed and two were taken to a nearby hospital.
