Texas Sen. Angela Paxton seeks divorce from AG Ken Paxton “on biblical grounds”

Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton announced Thursday she has filed for divorce from her husband Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Context: Ken Paxton, a Republican who is challenging Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) in next year’s GOP primary, has faced scrutiny over allegations of infidelity and abuse of office.

State of play: Angela Paxton (R-McKinney) posted on X she was seeking divorce “on biblical grounds” after 38 years of marriage.

What she’s saying: “I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation,” she wrote.

  • “But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage. I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.”

Ken Paxton on X said “I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time,” a few minutes after Angela Paxton’s post.

Flashback: During the 2023 impeachment proceedings that ended in Ken Paxton’s acquittal, House investigators alleged he used his position to benefit a political donor and secure a job for the woman with whom he was allegedly having an affair — an allegation he denied.

  • Angela Paxton attended the trial but recused herself from voting and then was barred from voting.

Zoom out: National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez wrote on X, “What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting.”

  • “No one should have to endure what Angela Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time,” she said.

The Paxtons have four children and five grandchildren.
