U.S. 1 and Highway 5 closures follow Aberdeen Lake flooding

As Tropical Storm Chantal continued to wreak havoc across Moore County on Sunday, severe flooding caused Aberdeen Lake to breach its banks, submerging the surrounding park and triggering road closures in the area.

Within hours, the water had completely overtaken all of Aberdeen Lake Park, with only the Recreation Center building spared. Playground equipment and the roof of the park’s covered picnic shelter were partially visible above the rising water.

The rushing water then overflowed southward and continued down Aberdeen Creek, where it crested the banks and flooded across U.S. 1. One motorist became stranded at the traffic light on U.S. 1 South near the intersection with U.S. 15-501. Floodwaters also covered nearby sections of N.C. Highway 5 at the U.S. 1 intersection.

As of Sunday evening, U.S. 1 remains completely shut down from the intersection with Highway 5 to the 15-501 junction at Poole Automotive. Officials expect the closure to remain in effect overnight as waters continue to rise.
