Julian McMahon, the Australian-American actor known for his portrayal of Ian Rain on Another World, has died at the age of 56 after a battle with cancer, Deadline reported. McMahon, who also gained fame for his roles in Nip/Tuck, Charmed, and Fantastic Four, died after a battle with cancer. His wife, Kelly McMahon, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, sharing that Julian died peacefully after a valiant effort to overcome the illness.

A Soap Star Who Made a Mark

McMahon’s career began on the Australian soap The Power, The Passion, and Home and Away, but it was his role on Another World (which marked 60 years last year) that made him a household name in the U.S. From 1993 to 1995, McMahon portrayed Ian Rain, a man seeking vengeance for the death of his father. His complex character, whose relationships with characters like Paulina (Judi Evans) and Josie (Amy Carlson) captivated viewers, quickly earned him a loyal fan base.

From Daytime to Prime-Time and Film

After his time on Another World, McMahon’s star continued to rise. He starred in the prime-time series Profiler, followed by Charmed, where he gained even more recognition. His career reached new heights with his portrayal of Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four films, which brought him international fame. Despite moving into film and prime-time television, McMahon always remembered his soap roots.

Additional film roles for McMahon include Premonition, RED, Paranoia, You’re Not You, Swinging Safari, and most recently, the 2024 The Surfer and The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.

His final role was in Netflix’s series The Residence. In it, he portrayed the Australian Prime Minister.
