Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has offered his condolences to the family of Diogo Jota, saying his death “saddened all Portuguese people.”
Jota died in a car crash alongside his brother, fellow soccer player André Silva, with De Sousa calling their deaths “tragic and premature.”
“Diogo Jota represented Portuguese football at the highest level, having started his career in the youth ranks of Gondomar, followed by Paços de Ferreira and Futebol Clube do Porto,” the statement added.
“In England, he played for Wolverhampton and currently for Liverpool, where he stood out internationally. For the national football team, he also demonstrated great professionalism and dedication, being part of a generation that has taken Portuguese football to the highest level.”
Liverpool Football Club is “devastated” by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother, the club said in a statement Thursday, calling the incident an “unimaginable loss.”
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss,” the statement continued.
The club added it would continue to give its “full support” to those affected by the loss.
Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva have died in a car crash in northwestern Spain.
Jota was just 28 and won three major trophies during his time at Liverpool and two UEFA Nations Leagues with the Portuguese national team. His death comes weeks after he got married.
