Starting guard leaves Pistons for Nuggets in NBA free agency

As NBA free agency continues, the Detroit Pistons missed out on re-signing another member of their 2024-2025 roster after Tim Hardaway has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Denver Nuggets, according to ESPN.

After being traded to Detroit by the Dallas Mavericks ahead of the season, the ex-Michigan star became a critical figure in an historic season for the Pistons that saw them reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

In 77 regular-season games as a starter, Hardaway averaged 11 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, shooting .406/.368/.855.

Hardaway, 33, joins fellow free agent guard Dennis Schröder in moving on from the Pistons. Schröder reportedly has agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with the Sacramento Kings.

So far, the Pistons have re-signed big man Paul Reed and brought in shooting guard Caris LeVert — who will likely fill some of the role Hardaway had last season — on a two-year deal.

The Pistons still have two players from last year’s roster out as free agents in Lindy Waters III and Malik Beasley.

Waters only played in 14 games after being dealt to the Pistons at the trade deadline. Beasley’s future with the organization is up in the air after contract talks stalled, following the news he’s being investigated for alleged gambling on NBA games and prop bets.

While Hardaway wasn’t lighting up the box score every night, he served as one of the top shooters on the team in a comeback season.

Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon expressed some hope that the team would retain some of their free agents, but thus far the team is 1-for-3.

“If we can keep some of the guys that we have as part of this run, some of the vets, that would be great,” Langdon said June 24. “We know they’re going to get interest from other teams as well. As we look to keep them, we’ll also have to have backup options as well if they choose to go somewhere else for a deal that we can’t match, or a deal that we can’t get to. We’d like to get those guys back but we’ll be prepared to have to go another direction.”
