Dolphins acquire TE Darren Waller; Is 2025 a ‘prove-it’ year in Miami?

Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz, Jori Epstein and Frank Schwab examine the ‘boom or bust’ signing of tight end Darren Waller and what the upcoming season means for the future of GM Chris Grier and coach Mike McDaniel.

I gotta be honest, if you can get the best of Darren Waller in an offense that’s creative, you are going to get massive production.

This has ultimate boomer-bust potential to me.

Simply based on the health of it because Darren Waller certainly, over the course of his career, has struggled at times to be available for games.

That’s just real.

And his last real good season was 2020.

Like, uh, he’s 33 years old in September, I guess, is.

I don’t know, why not?

I, I’m sure it’s not costing them anything.

At this point, it feels like something is wrong in Miami.

So, how much of a prove-it year do you think the Dolphins are facing?

I still think it’s more of a prove-it year for general manager Chris Grier than it is for Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

I do think Chris Grier has a prove-it year, and I think in part because he extended To’a Tagovailoa, and I do.

I think that both from a health standpoint and a production standpoint, you need to see the return on that mega deal if you want to be able to keep your job, but I don’t really think it’s a prove-it year for Mike.

I mean, every year is a prove-it year for everyone, so in that regard, yes, but I don’t view Mike McDaniel as being on the hot seat.

I do think this is a tough year for McDaniel in that.

If they do take another step back, let’s say they do finish 6 and 11, 5 and 12, I think that’s on the table for them.

It really is.

Unless To’a just comes back and it looks great and stays healthy, and I hope he does all year, by the way.

Then what do you do with Mike McDaniel?

Do you really give him another year?

I don’t know that they will.

I, I, I’m interested to see how it all shakes out because we have seen the culture issues.

We have seen kind of the shine off of Mike McDaniel.

I, I like Mike McDaniel as a coach.

I, I, I think he is a good offensive mind.

But this is a results-based business in many ways.

And if you take steps back two years in a row, I just wonder if they just clean house and everything gets reset.

I mean, we’ve talked about where’s the exit ramp for To’a’s contract and all this kind of, and, and Tyreek, let’s, let’s get out of this too, because that’s a pain in the behind.

I, I get where you’re coming from on, On just saying, hey, look, this guy did a good job, a really good job with our quarterback.

Maybe we just need to hand him a better, give him a better roster to deal with, because we haven’t; we’ve let a lot of talent walk out the door, and that’s not necessarily Mike McDaniel’s fault.
